Universal has fended off Summit Entertainment and The Weinstein Company to acquire the US distribution rights to Tomas Alfredson's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Deadline reported Monday.

The film, scripted by Peter Straughan and the late Bridget O'Connor, is an adaptation of John Le Carré's novel and stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Ralph Fiennes and Tom Hardy.

Universal bought the rights from Studiocanal; Working Title produced the film. It will be Alfredson's first film since 2008's Let the Right One In.
